The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in response to requests from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (DC), has issued Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) to make available to public health and medical personnel important diagnostic and therapeutic tools to identify and respond to the swine flu virus under certain circumstances. The agency issued these EUAs for the use of certain Relenza and Tamiflu antiviral products, and for the rRT-PCR Swine Flu Panel diagnostic test.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) welcomes the announcement by its constituent member associations in Montana, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Washington and Ohio of the formation of the National Federation of Nurses (NFN). Representing nearly 70,000 registered nurses nationwide, the NFN serves as a national union for registered nurses.

The nation’s infection preventionists can help stop the potential spread of swine flu according to the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). The organization noted that infection preventionists, who protect patients and health care workers from infection on a daily basis, can and should be an integral part of public health efforts to respond to this growing health threat.

Interactive voice response systems may help improve monitoring of patients taking anticoagulants such as warfarin while reducing the workload of clinical staff, found a study by Ottawa researchers in CMAJ. Oral anticoagulants are prescribed to approximately 5% of seniors and require diligent monitoring to avoid serious adverse events such as blood clots, hemorrhages and death.

Registered nurses from across Texas and the United States will be on hand Tuesday, April 28 as the Texas Legislature holds its first hearing on HB 1489, a bill to guarantee a safe ratio of nurses to patients in Texas hospitals. The Texas Hospital Patient Protection Act of 2009, HB 1489, would save the lives of countless Texas patients with this simple patient safety improvement.
