Sixteen percent of Georgia’s residents experience persistent problems staying awake during the day, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and published online in the
American Journal of Epidemiology. This research points to the importance of diagnosing and treating sleep problems before they could potentially develop into long term health issues.

Faced with an aging population, a group of academics and nursing home industry executives collaborated for over a year to examine ways to improve on current nursing standards, leadership, management and retention of RNs who play a key role in the nursing home environment.

Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill. recently presented the results of the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s (IHI) 2008 Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care. The analysis measured the impact of the InformMed Pharmaceutical Algorithm Computerized Calculator (pac2)™ on medication safety. InformMed’s pac2 is a handheld dose checking technology that helps nurses to administer medication doses that require quick mathematical calculations and drug information recall.

A recent survey carried out on Nurses.co.uk showed that only 20.9% of UK nurses think that assisted suicide should be legalised here. With the recent high profile cases of UK citizens opting for assisted suicide in clinics overseas it raises the question of whether it should be legalised here in the UK.

Commenting on the results for the Nursing and Midwifery subject unit of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), Professor Ann Topping, Deputy Chair of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Research Society, said, "These results show the benefits that even modest investment in high quality nursing and midwifery research can achieve. This kind of work enables a better understanding of the needs of patients and their carers.

For the first time in history, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) today released quality ratings for each of the nation's 15,800 nursing homes that participate in Medicare or Medicaid. Facilities are assigned star ratings from a low of one star to a high of five stars based on health inspection surveys, staffing information, and quality of care measures. The ratings are publicly available on the agency's Nursing Home Compare Web site at www.medicare.gov.

Following a period of consultation the NMC will publish its guidance for the care of older people in February 2009. The guidance is intended to make a positive difference to the way that older people are cared for in all care settings by promoting individuality, dignity, independence and choice. Around 300 people including nurses, carers and older people took part in a series of focus groups that were held around the UK in October 2008.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing's (NCSBN) Nursys.com Web site will implement paperless verifications beginning Jan. 1, 2009. As of this date, paper Nursys® verification request forms will no longer be accepted by NCSBN.
