During labor, the continued presence of a doula - an experienced non-medical female companion who provides continuous labor support - has significant beneficial effects for middle- and upper-class women in childbirth, even when they have their male partner or other family member with them, according to a new study in the journal Birth.

Over 1,500 nephrology nurses and health care professionals gathered at the American Nephrology Nurses' Association (ANNA) 39th National Symposium April 27-30, 2008, in Philadelphia, PA, making it one of the most highly attended conferences in the association's history. Innovation was the recurring theme in all education sessions, which spanned nephrology nursing practice.

A new study from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine shows that a lack of sleep can cause the brain to temporarily shut down. For nurses working long shifts and limiting their sleep, these lapses in functionality could be detrimental to patient care.

Electronic documentation has called attention to the need for the standardization of nursing terminology and ways to capture nursing interventions. Nurse leaders are hoping that technology will help standardize communication between disciplines, improve care and safety, and increase the amount of time nurses have to spend with patients.

The number of states with laws prohibiting smoking in private sector worksites, restaurants and/or bars in the United States tripled and the number with no such laws was halved between 2005 and 2007, according to a report in this week's issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Women, newborns, and families in the Boston area will benefit from the contributions of new and handmade blankets during the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) annual Blankets for BabiesTM public service campaign during the ACNM 53rd Annual Meeting & Exhibit in Boston. Three area women's organizations will receive baby blankets, which are donated by certified nurse-midwives, ertified midwives, student nurse-midwives, exhibitors and other meeting guests.
