In the wake of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) new mandate to not pay for certain healthcare associated infections, hospitals are starting to take responsibility, and the financial burden, for their own errors. The Massachusetts Hospital Association is asking their hospitals to adopt a voluntary "no-charge" policy for preventable errors, meaning neither the patient nor their insurance company will have to pay for a hospital's mistakes.

The Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney, T.D. today, Friday 30 November 2007, announce a public consultation on proposed new legislation for the regulation of nurses and midwives. The Minister wishes to obtain the views of the public and key stakeholders on the draft new legislation. The views expressed in this consultation process will be taken on board when finalising the legislation. [click link for full article]

The Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney TD, today, 30th November, 2007 congratulated the first group of nurses and midwives to successfully complete the Certificate in Nursing (Nurse/Midwife Prescribing) Programme at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. "Improving patient care is at the heart of the nurse and midwife prescribing initiative and I believe that patients will receive earlier interventions and therefore a better service" the Minister said. Heavily endorsed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, rapid response teams (RRTs) have been shown to decrease the number of codes for adult patients outside the ICU. These small but highly specific teams are called upon at the first sign of distress to prevent a patient outside the ICU from coding, essentially providing the high level of monitoring that they would receive without being in intensive care. Yet, until recently, little research has been done on how these teams can save the lives of pediatric patients.

A 41 year-old mental health nurse was struck off the register after a series of drug administration errors, which included giving one patient twice the correct dosage of medication.Jacqueline Margaret Wilde, from Flintshire in England was working at Altbridge Care Home between February and July 2005 when she failed to accurately record and administer drugs on four separate occasions. A 55 year old nurse from Thornton Heath, Surrey was suspended on Friday, 23 November, 2007 at a Conduct and Competence hearing of the Nursing and Midwifery Council in London. Mr Tennyon Lansana was employed by Bromley Hospital NHS Trust at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, Kent when on several occasions he demonstrated a lack of standards of knowledge, skill and judgement required to practise without supervision as a staff nurse on a medical ward. If hospitals added one more full-time registered nurse on staff to care for patients, the number of hospital-related deaths in the United States could decrease significantly, according to a new review. However, cost concerns and a worsening nursing shortage might make this an unlikely scenario. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has issued an advice sheet for nurses and midwives who administer Botulinum toxin. The advice, available on the NMC website is to be read in conjunction with the Standards for Medicine Management (2007) and clarifies the NMC's position regarding the administration of Botulinum toxin from a remote prescription. AARP Legislative Counsel David Certner made the following statement in response to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) announcement regarding poor performing nursing homes in the Special Focus Facility (SFF) program: "Residents in the poorest performing nursing homes and their families have a right to know that the care they receive may be sub-standard.
