Registered nurses at Children's Hospital Oakland voted overwhelmingly last night to authorize their RN negotiating team to call a strike if an agreement with the hospital is not reached, the California Nurses Association/ National Nurses Organizing Committee announced recently. The vote comes as a result of CHO's failure to address RN concerns on patient care and because CHO has proposed sweeping reductions in healthcare coverage for the RNs. [click link for full article]

Registered nurses at Eastern Maine Medical Center will hold a vote on Thursday and Friday to authorize their bargaining team to call a strike if their serious concerns about patient safety are not resolved, the Maine State Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee announces recently. The nurses express worry over EMMC's refusal to address key patient safety provisions, including most urgently the issue of safe staffing. [click link for full article]

In a move the UK government says aims to offer women more choice, local maternity units are being converted to services run by midwives. Practical and financial constraints on public sector hospitals could be dictating how and when babies are born. Two new studies (1,2) show that as the number of elective, planned caesarean sections rises, more and more babies are born during the week and fewer come into the world at weekends. It appears that hospitals schedule births during the week when they are fully resourced and staff is working 'normal' hours at no extra cost. [click link for full article]

Although caesarean sections can "sav[e] lives when performed as an emergency intervention" during childbirth, the procedure can cause "more harm than good when overused," Jennifer Block, author of the book "Pushed: The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care," writes in a Los Angeles Times opinion piece. Registered nurses from St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, seeking protection in their role as patient advocates and better care for their patients along with major improvements in pay and benefits, will announce on Monday their intention to join the National Nurses Organizing Committee/California Nurses Association (NNOC/CNA). In doing so, they will unite with 10,000 of their Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) RN colleagues at 25 hospitals in California in the NNOC/CNA. [click link for full article]

What makes a supervisor? It's a question pitting nurses against nurse executives as Congress considers the Re-Empowerment of Skilled and Professional Employees and Construction and Tradesworkers (RESPECT) Act, which would redefine supervisory responsibilities and ensure nurses and other skilled workers could join unions and bargain collectively.

At the request of the California Nurses Association, the federal mediator contacted Fremont-Rideout Health Group and asked the parties to meet this week. The registered nurses agreed to the proposed date of Wednesday, September 26, but FRHG refused.After RNs directly called on Bill Bravos, Chairman of the FRHG Board of Directors, to direct their attorney to meet, hospital officials have said they are available October 4, but are still refusing to move on any of their proposals.
