Over half of nurses do not believe or do not know whether the NHS can deliver an electronic patient record in the foreseeable future, according to a new survey released by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). The RCN survey found two-thirds of nurses (66%) welcome the introduction of an electronic patient record, although there continues to be a high degree of uncertainty about the impact the record will have on patient care, safety and confidentiality. Pennsylvania has taken a large step towards improving health care options for women with the passage of prescriptive authority for certified nurse-midwives (CNMs). Pennsylvania is the last state to grant prescriptive authority to CNMs. The American College of Nurse-Midwives applauds Governor Edward G. Rendell and the Pennsylvania legislature for following suit with the rest of the nation by approving prescriptive authority for CNMs. [click link for full article]

A nurse is over twice as likely to suffer from occupational asthma, compared to the rest of the population, according to an article in The Lancet this week. The risk for cleaners is 71% higher. [click link for full article]

The American Nurses Association (ANA) and the American Medical Association (AMA) continue to be very concerned about criminalizing decisions about patient care especially those made during the chaotic aftermath of a disaster, when medical personnel and supplies are severely compromised. During any disaster, health care providers - doctors, nurses and others - must work together to make the best decisions that they can given available resources. [click link for full article]

A new study published in the July issue of the open access journal Critical Care finds that understaffing of registered nurses in hospital intensive care units increases the risk of serious infections for patients; specifically pneumonia, a preventable and potential deadly complication that can add thousands of dollars to the cost of care for hospital patients. Three quarters (74%) of the general public would support NHS nurses taking some form of industrial action over pay, provided it did not affect patient care, according to an independent survey commissioned for the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). The YouGov poll of more than 2000 adults in Great Britain also found the public overwhelming believe this year's pay award for nurses is unfair. [click link for full article]

Nurse morale is at a ten year low according to a new survey commissioned by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). The survey shows that optimism over job security, career progression and training are at their lowest levels since 1997. The survey also highlights that more than a quarter of all nurses are still forced to take a second job to make ends meet. [click link for full article]

While the United States has more nurses and physicians than ever before, upcoming retirements and a dysfunctional workplace could cause clinical shortages that could become more severe than the industry can bear, according to a new study from PricewaterhouseCoopers Health Research Institute.
