The American Nurses Association (ANA) acknowledges the valuable role of men in nursing with the establishment of the Luther Christman Award. The Luther Christman award recognizes the significant contribution an individual man has made to the nursing profession. It is named in honor of Dr. Luther Christman and his outstanding service to advancing the nursing profession. "Luther Christman is a visionary leader in nursing," remarked ANA President Rebecca M. The Griffith University project will develop and pilot a model of clinical education for health students that improves their learning experience and better reflects the realities of clinical practice.Professor Amanda Henderson, from Griffith's School of Nursing and Midwifery, said patient safety largely depended on effective communication and collaboration between the health professions. Hospitals that have better working conditions for nurses are safer for elderly intensive care unit (ICU) patients, according to a recent report, led by Columbia University School of Nursing researchers that measured rates of hospital-associated infections. The dean of the Emory University Nursing School predicts that a shortage of at least 800,000 nurses by 2020 threatens to undermine care for an aging American population. It's troubling news for senior living providers, who are dealing with an increasingly acute population. Speaking to the National Press Club in Washington, Dean Marla Salmon called the nursing popluation "an equation that is failing. [click link for full article]

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) welcomes the discussions at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Annual Conference in Brighton (22 - 24 May) on patient choice and workforce planning.A new RCM poll indicates that maternity services are under pressure from the increasing birth rate, staff shortages and more complicated deliveries. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the National Collaborating Centre for Women and Children's Health have today (23 May 2007) issued a guideline on assessing and managing children with fever. This is the first guideline to provide all healthcare professionals, including GPs, nurses, pharmacists and paediatricians with a practical tool to assess the symptoms of a child with fever and advise them on how they should be cared for within the appropriate setting.
